K & J Culture began with a simple feeling: that the small, everyday moments in Korea and Japan are just as fascinating as the big, postcard-famous ones.
The sound of a convenience store door chime in Tokyo.
The smell of street tteokbokki on a cold night in Seoul.
A quiet train ride where everyone is glued to their phones, but the etiquette is completely different depending on which side of the sea you’re on.
This blog is my way of collecting those moments, arranging them side by side, and inviting you to wander between two cultures that are similar enough to be cousins and different enough to always surprise each other.
What Is K & J Culture?
K & J Culture is an English-language blog that explores Korean and Japanese culture through:
- Everyday life (convenience stores, cafés, trains, workplaces)
- Food and drink (from izakaya snacks to late-night Korean fried chicken)
- Language and communication (honorifics, unspoken rules, “reading the air”)
- Pop culture (dramas, anime, music, games, trends)
- Traditions and modern life (festivals, family customs, changing values)
This is not just a travel brochure or a list of “Top 10 Things To Do.”
It’s a place for stories, context, and comparisons—how things feel, not just how they look.
Who Is This Blog For?
K & J Culture is for you if:
- You’re planning a trip to Korea or Japan and want more than just tourist traps.
- You already love K-pop, J-pop, anime, manga, dramas, or movies and want to understand the culture behind them.
- You’re studying Korean or Japanese and want cultural insight to match your vocabulary lists.
- You live in one country but are endlessly curious about the other.
- Or you simply enjoy thoughtful writing about places, people, and how culture shapes everyday life.
Think of this blog as a friendly, slightly nerdy friend who enjoys overthinking café interiors, convenience store snacks, and train etiquette so you don’t have to.
What You’ll Find Here
On K & J Culture, you can expect:
- Side-by-side comparisons
How is a Korean office different from a Japanese one? What about school life, dating culture, or drinking customs? - Practical culture guides
How not to be “that tourist” in a Japanese onsen.
What to say (and not say) in Korean when meeting someone for the first time. - Hidden corners & everyday details
Not just “famous temple” and “must-see palace,” but neighborhood stories, small rituals, and the tiny things locals hardly notice until someone points them out. - Personal reflections
Moments of culture shock, quiet joy, awkward misunderstandings, and what they reveal about both societies—and about us.
My goal is to make both Korea and Japan feel warmer, clearer, and more human, whether you’re visiting for a week or falling in love with these cultures for a lifetime.
About the Writer
I’m a Korean blogger who has spent years watching Korea and Japan from multiple angles—through travel, language study, media, friendships, and long, late-night conversations.
I’m endlessly curious about:
- Why similar social rules show up in both countries—but for slightly different reasons.
- Why a tiny detail (like how people line up, pay, bow, or apologize) can reveal an entire worldview.
- How both cultures are changing under the pressure of technology, globalization, and pop culture.
K & J Culture is where I bring together that curiosity, research, and lived experience in a way that’s easy to read, practical to use, and hopefully, a little comforting too.
